You Can Publish Your Own Book

You Can Publish Your Own Book

Do you ever wish you could write a book? Nicely, my advice as one who has written a book and self-published it, is start off with what you already have. That is how I eventually got my small book “Dig It! Gardening Guidelines for Dogs” published.

I am a writer, I love to write points – poems, book titles, articles, story suggestions. And I enjoy talking about points to my friends. That is how “Dig It!” moved closer to becoming a book. It began out as a brief humorous post in a nearby Dog club newsletter “Schnauzer Scope” and it went from there, till it was a genuine book you can hold in your hand and wonder at (or read and chuckle more than!).

I told my friend Allyson Hean about the write-up and gave her a copy when she asked to read it. Ally loves to draw things. I remember her ‘scribbling’ the most gorgeous pencil drawings in meetings at the Parent Group at Mallala Primary School we had been each involved in when our kids had been younger.

Allyson took the post, did some beautiful drawings and we decided, what the heck, we’d self-publish a book, as easy as that. I already knew a nearby printer who had performed some function on points I was involved in, so we had a chat and away it all went.

I expanded the original post and Ally did more drawings and put the entire factor together utilizing Microsoft Publisher. I applied for an ISBN for the book, and a bar code, and it was prepared for the printer. We took along a disc that had our book on it and gave it to the printer with an order for 100 copies.

Those 100 copies disappeared fairly nicely, so I ordered yet another 100 copies. Those had been slower to disappear, but that was OK, my costs had been covered and the essential thing was that I was able to connect with other men and women who adore gardening and who enjoy dogs.

I have sold copies of my book for up to and have also swapped copies for other people’s books. Some copies have been strategically given away for cost-free. As soon as I had sold sufficient copies, I ordered 100 more copies, and the remnants of that print run and the copies I still have left.

I have had enjoyable with the whole method, and I’ve learned points about self-publishing. I’ve learned it is tough work to get distribution and you have to be prepared to utilise opportunities as they arise. It is a long way from getting a shy and retiring author locked away with our pen and paper, to becoming a bight and bubbly author promoting your book simply because you know it is the most fantastic Christmas present for those hard to obtain for buddies who enjoy their garden and/or their dog and they do not like anything else.

It is also fantastic for anybody with a sense of humour and it is almost worth the money just for the lovely photos Allyson has completed!

If you feel you would like to give this a attempt, there are lots of net web sites there to help you and there are also lots of self-publishing books accessible – check out your nearby library, in fact, construct a stronger relationship with your nearby library – they may possibly be willing to aid you in a lot of ways you haven’t even believed about. I’ve been to some great book launches at my favourite library, and I know if I had put on a book launch there I would have created a lot more sales.

So that is my story. I am not anybody unique, I’m just an ordinary individual who had an concept and was prepared to take it to its logical conclusion. You too can publish your own book!

Book Swapping and Exchange Sites : the Pros and Cons

Book Swapping and Exchange Sites : the Pros and Cons

Posted by admin in Book Exchange

swap book
by Polkaroo

The idea of exchanging your old used books for new ones you haven’t read is an idea which is gaining momentum across the internet. Used book swapping sites now boast hundreds of thousands of registered members and millions of used books ready for to be exchanged with other book lovers.

So what is the appeal? Why should you join an online book exchange web site when there are so many other ways of acquiring books? Well, here are some arguments for and against joining.

Why should you join a book trading site?

Well, for a start, if you are someone who regularly buys books, it is more than likely going to save you a lot of money. Book swapping sites are free to join, and for the price of postage and one used book from your collection, you can get new books to read. Effectively, this means you can pick up a new book for under – this includes hardback books, cookbooks and textbooks too. That offers the possibility of making big savings when compared to any other way of buying books.

Secondly, you can give yourself a pat on the back for recycling books and saving the environment in the process. Swapping rather than buying books means less trees are felled to produce reading material. Again, this can only be a good thing so far as environmental issues are concerned.

Thirdly, it’s a great way to declutter your book shelves and help out someone else at the same time by giving them a book they are looking for.

Book trading sites are also a great place to find out of print and hard to find books. These can often be expensive to find otherwise, and you can waste a lot of time looking for them. At book swapping sites, you simply add the books you want to a wish list and when it comes in to the site, you are sent an email alert saying its there. Much easier.

One more thing – the selection is huge. Sure, you can go hit all the used book stores in town and you might find what you are looking for but probably not. A used book club on the other hand has millions of books in their system. One swap site claims to have over 2.5 million books and that’s just on one site.

Firstly, why not just use a library? Then the books are free right? Personally, I look at libraries as something aside from all other forms of acquiring new reading material because you do not get to own the book. You get a specified period in which to read the book, in many cases will get fined for returning it late if you’ve not done with it, and have a limited selection to choose from. Libraries are great, but they’re not ideal.

Used books are not for everyone. If you like your books shiny and new regardless of the price, then an online book swapping club is not for you. Most swap sites have rules about the quality of book allowed to be offered up for exchange but they are predominantly used books.

New books make money for the publisher and the author, used books do not. Whilst its easy to argue they have already factored in trading on the used book market into the price of a new book, the fact remains, buying or swapping used books costs them money and may affect new authors in particular.

Either way, online book swapping sites are becoming increasingly popular, with millions of books waiting to be traded with swappers all over the world. Whether a book swapping club is right for you is a matter of personal choice, but either way, it is something to consider the next time you look at that shelf full of books you’ll never read again or choke on the price of a new hardback.
