Q&A: A music question for Black American individuals?
Question by Dropkick Murphys: A music question for Black American men and women?
When I travelled through the US many years back, I would swap CDs with folks I was on trains or buses with, so we could get a feel for each other people taste in music.
I noticed a lot of Black American men and women only stuck to American Rap. Tupac was the flavour of the month. What puzzled me is that a lot of did not seem keen on admitting liking other varieties of music and notably from other countries. One woman I was on a train with admitting to liking Bon Jovi. Her colleagues looked at her as if she had thrown away the keys to the kingdom. She stood by her statement and played my copy of New Jersey.
So for Black American people, what other bands and singers do you like? I’m hoping for some cool answers.
Nikki – I wanted to meet an African-American, but I couldn’t discover Charlize Theron anywhere.

“BLACK PEOPLE” DO NOT GET EXPOSURE TO ALOT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSIC BECAUSE WE LISTEN TO WHAT OUR FRIENDS LISTEN TO. SINCE THE GOVERNMENT PACKS ALL THE “BLACK PEOPLE” IN ONE PLACE, WE TEND TO LACK DIVERSITY
I listen to and own music from The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis..and tons more
Correct term is African American, and ALOT of my “Black American” friends will openly admit that I have turned them on to Lynard Skinard, The Eagles, Metallica, AC/DC, and many more rock n roll bands. And rock music isn’t even my genre of choice. So, I would venture to guess that you didn’t run into many “black american” people and the ones you did run into might not have liked your specific bands.
